This Asian-influenced accent lamp is decorated with four large lithophane panels. The frame is crafted from steel and is given a matte black powder-coated finish. 60 watt bulb and 6-foot cord with in-line switch included. UL-listed. 13 1/4" tall.

About Our Lithophane Lamps

Our lithophane lamps are the works of The Porcelain Garden, a company founded in 1982 that has since become known for producing the finest and most intricately detailed lithophanes in the United States. First invented in 1827, a lithophane, which means "vision in stone," is a porcelain engraving that virtually comes alive when illuminated from behind. A breathtakingly detailed picture in warm sepia emerges when light passes through the different thicknesses of the porcelain panels. In fact, these illuminated artworks are so detailed that they are sometimes even mistaken for photographs. To create such a piece, the design is first carved into wax using a table light as a guide to help the artists see the image as they work. A mold is made from the carving, and then porcelain is pressed into the mold. The dried porcelain is finished by hand and high-fired in a kiln up to 2300° F, and then each piece is carefully inspected under a light. This high temperature firing makes the porcelain nonporous, durable, and beautifully translucent, and the gradual transition from thick to thin produces a truly amazing range of delicate shadings. In the end, each lithophane is a magical work of art to be cherished as heirlooms for years to come.
